Pop-Islamist Youth Politics in Malaysia: Rethinking 'Instruments of the Devil'
Lecture by Dominik Müller (Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology) as part of the ZMO-Colloquium The Idea of Youth: Concepts, Practices and Lifeworlds of a Global Category

The presentation will explore how Malaysia’s Islamist opposition movement, led by the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS), is currently undergoing dramatic cultural changes and has developed an unprecedented normative fl exibility in the fi eld of modern popular culture. Based on ethnographic data, it will elucidate how, spearheaded by its youth wing, the Islamic Party has shifted from a group that long held the image of conservative zealots who try to ban any form of art and entertainment towards being a pioneer of pop-cultural creativity for missionary (dakwah) purposes. This reorientation, however, and the underlying processes of normative change continue to be fi ercely contested within the movement, and parallel to the rise of pop-Islamism, the same media-savvy young generation is now also using pop-cultural channels to propagate more classical Islamist ideas...

Leisure Matters: Perspectives from African Studies
Lecture by Katrin Bromber as part of the Urban Studies Seminar Urban Spaces of Leisure, Arts and Sports

How does the concept of leisure, which is based on Eurocentric notions of time, space, and work inform realities in Africa? How does it influence the ways in which we study these realities? What does leisure, as a conceptual gateway, allow us to see? During the last three decades, research on “modern” leisure activities such as cinema, sports and other forms of leisure, first and foremost, in urban African centers produced a substantial body of very interesting case studies on the subject. Furthermore, these studies have generated new questions and conceptual ideas about temporalities...

Der neue Iran

Panel Discussion (in German) by Ronen Steinke (SZ), Sonja Hegasy (ZMO) and Stefanie Schüler-Springorum (ZfA)
